So, will the carrier-sold phones be permanently bootloader-locked, causing headaches for anyone who wants to run their own flavor of Android, or root their device? Will chargers be proprietary and specific to the Pixels, either the phone in general, or the 3&4, with exclusivity given to the carrier so they can charge $50 for a $15-20 wireless charger?
It pisses me off so much that google’s phones went from “a device you completely own and control, escape the carrier bullshit, do whatever you want with it, it’s yours” to drinking the carrier koolaid right down to the proprietary accessories. With USB-PD there is now ZERO EXCUSE for this bullshit.
Even though you can buy a Google Edition device new – Google’s made it difficult for buyers in the used market to be able to tell whether the seller is offering a carrier phone or GE phone, because unlike iPhone devices, there’s no clear model # for the different devices. The only people who win are the carriers and used phone recyclers; it’s a tacit admission that the market does not want locked devices and said devices will depreciate faster.
